The Rochester Institute of Technology Benchmark Report Examines Preventative Maintenance Programs

Our recent blog posts about workplace safety, Worker Safety and the Cost of Ignoring It and Steps to Improving Your Organization’s Preventative Maintenance, we talked about the risks of workplace injuries and associated costs and how proactive preventative maintenance programs can help reduce those risks and costs.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Benchmark Report of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) highlighted the challenges small businesses faced with managing health and safety. Some of the highlights included:

• Smaller businesses faced barriers to safety and health management as they did not have the in-house resources and expertise to build strong programs.
• The main motivation in implementing a preventative maintenance program was reducing injuries and worker’s compensation rates.
• Return on investment of these programs was a critical decision criterion for choosing and implementing a preventative maintenance program.
• The biggest hurdle with implementation was time and paperwork, i.e. resources investment, given that a successful safety program requires good documentation and continuous improvement.
• Additional challenges included employee participation requirements due to lack of dedicated internal resources (a company safety expert) and safety compliance requirements.
